In this article, I want to show you 7 ActiveCampaign Automation Examples I really like & that are handy for most online businesses.

From lead magnet delivery to newsletters to list cleaning, we cover it all.

Let’s dive in!

Bonus: you can get all the example automations in this article here πŸ˜„

Lead Magnet Delivery

The quickest way to gain new subscribers is to have some kind incentive to make them give you their email address.

That could be a general lead magnet or a content upgrade that’s related to the piece of content.

Think about checklists, cheat sheets, google sheets, templates, etc.

With the automation below, you can easily deliver it.

Plus, it will automatically resend the email to anyone who doesn’t open the email within 2 days.

Onboarding

You don’t just want to send a bunch of random emails to new contacts.

That’s why I’m convinced that every online business needs a smooth onboarding process for new people on their list.

In the example automation below, we send a welcome email to everyone who didn’t receive any email yet.

And after that, we send a couple of emails to make people familiar with us.

Evergreen Newsletter

Newsletters are a great way to keep people engaged over a longer period of time.

But it can also be stressful to have to write new newsletter every week.

Plus, old subscribers would get the same emails as new subscribers with a regular newsletter.

That’s why you could think about creating an evergreen newsletter.

That means people are still getting an email every week, but this time you already write them in advance.

In the automation below, you see how that works.

And no, you really don’t have to write a whole year in advance.

Just start with 4 weeks (4 emails) and expand the automation from there.

Last Interaction

I think it’s important to keep track of when someone last interacted with one of your emails.

If that’s a really long time ago, then it’s better to unsubscribe them.

In the automation below, you see how we update the Last Interaction custom field with the current date.

Main List Cleaner

In the previous example, we talked about how you can create an automation that keeps track of when a subscriber interacted for the last time.

In the automation below, you can see how we unsubscribe contacts automatically 6 months after they last interacted with our emails so you can keep your email list clean.

Interest Tagging with Site Tracking

You want your emails to be as relevant as possible to your audience.

That’s why it’s smart to keep track of people their interests.

In the automation below you see how we tag interests based on which pages they visit on our website.

5-Day Challenge

A challenge basically a mini-course sent through email designed to help people achieve a specific goal.

Some challenges start on a certain date, others are completely evergreen & automated.

The example below is a combination of both.

Everyone who joins before the 4th of April gets a welcome email about that the challenge is starting on the 4th of April.

Everyone who joins on or after the 4th of April gets a welcome email with that the challenge is starting the next day.

    Hi Max,
just found your amazing tutorials for AC.
I like them a lot (saved several for later reading).

    How I found you:
Just googled, how to combine evergreen AND fresh mails in evergreen newsletters.
But you wrote, you don’t recommend that.

But what about the nice content (all the cool blogposts, quarterly reports (behind the scenes insights) and so on, which could be interesting for my readers as well?

    How do you cope that?

    Thanks in advance,
    Sarah from Berlin – Germany

      Hey Sarah! Good question!

I think it’s totally okay to combine evergreen & fresh emails. I would only avoid sending them on the same day.

An easy way to do that is to send evergreen on for example Tuesday, and the fresh emails on Thursday πŸ™ƒ

Hope that helps! And thanks for the nice words! πŸ€—

        Makes sense!

Hi Max, I’m absolutely loving your tutorials!

I have created the ‘Last Interaction’ automation, but it’s only populating the date for some of my contacts and not others. Any ideas why this would be?

    Thanks so much,
    Sam

Hey Sam! Happy to hear you like my tutorials πŸ€—

It’s a bit hard to say what’s going wrong without seeing how you’ve set up the automation.

So your automations triggers when someone opens an email or clicks a link in an email? And then, you have some people who opened and the automation doesn’t start?
